Gary Hart is a graduate of Southern Nazarene University, Yale Divinity School, Yale Law School, and Oxford University where he earned a doctorate (D.Phil.) in 2001. He served as United State Senator representing the State of Colorado from 1975 to 1987, never before having sought public office.
He is the author of 21 books, including his Oxford doctoral thesis, Restoration of the Republic: the Jeffersonian Ideal in 21st Century America.
After retiring from office, Senator Hart was an advisor to the U.S. Department of State, where he was chair of the International Security Advisory Board and U.S. Envoy to Northern Ireland, and the U.S. Department of Defense, where he was co-chair of the Commission on U.S. National Security for the 21st Century.
Senator Hart is the father of two adult children, Andrea and John. His wife of 63 years, Lee Hart, passed away recently. He resides in the State of Colorado.
