The Middle School Cultural Exchange Program: Making Lifelong Friends

Chinese leader Hu Jintao to attend nuclear summit in U.S.

China announced Thursday that President Hu Jintao planned to attend a nuclear nonproliferation conference this month in Washington, an affirmative gesture after months of giving the cold shoulder to the Obama administration over a U.S. arms sale to Taiwan.

Visas bring summer workers and global ambassadors

With warm weather just around the corner, restaurants, retailers and other seasonal businesses are lining up their summer employees. On Cape Cod this year, around 2,000 of those workers are likely to come from the State Department's summer work travel program, which invites students from around the globe to visit the United States for four months of sightseeing, cultural exchange – and employment.

International Criminal Court doesn’t need power over ‘aggression’

The ICC was established to be a standing international mechanism to prosecute war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. Eight trials are underway at the court, all arising out of civil wars in Africa. The court has yet to convict a defendant of any of these offenses.

Shanghai’s Expo Is Chance For World To Court China

Given China's rising international profile, the Shanghai Expo seems to be less about inventions and more about geopolitics. In Azerbaijan, voices for democracy strive to be heard

American policymakers should have learned from countries in the Middle East and other areas that authoritarian, corrupt regimes do not make reliable allies. Nor is their "stability" based on the consent of the governed. The democratic opposition in Azerbaijan does not seek intervention or financial assistance from the United States. What we need is the moral support of an America that stands by its own values.

Art as Cultural Exchange

Seattle’s diverse, multicultural population provides the ideal setting for an international gallery such as ArtXchange. “Art is a reflection of culture and I believe as a city, the arts are still catching up to reflect our cultural diversity,” says Edmonds. “Traditional fine art is primarily Euro-western defined and critiqued, and I would love to see a broader, more anthropologically based view of art.”

Expo is going to last for six months and Shanghai is expecting 70 million visitors (mostly domestic) to the city to see the pavilions that the participating countries have built. (Yes, thanks to heroic fund raising efforts by Hillary Clinton, even the US is going to have a pavilion...)
