How does this news event bode for the state of public diplomacy in the Obama administration? It tells you obviously that the new president is keenly aware of the importance of addressing foreign audiences himself. In terms of the public diplomacy institutions of the U.S. government, which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in charge of, it appears some of the mistakes of the Bush years could be repeated. In her confirmation hearings as secretary of state, Mrs. Clinton had little to say on the subject, devoting only a few paragraphs to public diplomacy in her written testimony.

Iran Launches Satellite in a Challenge for Obama

NHK goes global with all-English broadcasts

NHK on Monday began a 24-hour all-English global broadcasting service targeting overseas viewers via satellite and the Internet...NHK began international broadcasting in 1995, currently reaching about 80 million households worldwide. NHK plans to expand coverage areas mainly in Asia with the aim of increasing viewership to some 110 million households worldwide by March, officials said.
