KEEP READINGUSC and OneBeat 2014 Fellows discuss Music Diplomacy
In November 2014, the USC Association of Public Diplomacy Scholars (APDS) hosted a panel discussion with OneBeat's 2014 Fellows to debate the role of music in creating cross-cultural dialogue. In this video, Director of the USC Annenberg Master of Public Diplomacy Program, Nicholas J. Cull, explains what makes programs such as OneBeat outstanding contributors to public diplomacy: the ability to tap into listening. Instead of simply sending American musical stars abroad, OneBeat brings musicians from around the world for a residency and tour program in the United States where they not only experience the American way of living in person, but also share their own stories and perspectives with their American audiences. OneBeat is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is produced by Bang on a Can's Found Sound Nation.
On February 13, APDS will host "Harmony or Discord: Exploring the Impact of Music Diplomacy” a conference intended to examine the effectiveness of using music in international affairs, global development, and social justice efforts.
