The USC Center on Public Diplomacy is pleased to announce Phuong Mai Anh Tran, a Ph.D. candidate at the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa, Canada, as recipient of our 2023 CPD Doctoral Dissertation Grant.
Tran's primary research agenda involves analyzing international scholarships for higher education through the lens of public diplomacy. International scholarships for higher education were incorporated into the Sustainable Development Goals (as SDG4b) in 2015. Tran, through her research, seeks to provide empirical insights to analyze the role and efficacy of this public diplomacy tool. Specifically, she is exploring the efforts by the United States and the People's Republic of China in offering international higher education scholarships to countries such as Vietnam. Vietnam has received scholarship programs from both the U.S. and China, enabling its students to study in these respective donor countries.
