The first Experimental Media Art Festival in Taiwan (EXIT) will open in Taipei on Thursday featuring a wide range of avant-garde films from Asia and Canada that are rarely exhibited in museum galleries or screened in local film festivals.

The 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition, which begins Nov. 6, is the perfect opportunity for Taiwan to showcase its soft power to the global community, Taipei City Mayor Hau Long-bin said Nov. 5.

President Ma Ying-jeou said Monday that the inauguration of direct flights between the city airports of Taipei and Tokyo is indicative of the strong relationship between Taiwan and Japan and of Taiwan's ability to strike a balance in its diplomacy while improving ties with China.

This summer, 21 groups of students attending various universities in Taiwan left the comfort of their own homes and family to travel to such far-flung places as Africa, Central and South America and the Pacific Islands.

Taiwan has been trying to raise its international profile with the goal of becoming a full member of the world community even though its relations with mainland China have improved over the past year, the British Broadcasting Corporation has reported.

China has pulled out of the 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival due to a sovereignty issue over Taiwan and announced it will boycott other festival-related events. The head of the Chinese delegation, Jiang Ping, told festival organizers that the Taiwanese delegation must not attend the festival under the name Taiwan, but as "Chinese Taipei"...

Often mistaken for being under China's sovereignty and sometimes even for being Thailand, Taiwan is pushing hard to stake out a more distinct international image.

The leader of the renowned Ming Hwa Yuan Gezai opera troupe from Taiwan hailed British audiences as "bosom friends" Friday and voiced hope that the troupe will have another chance to perform in the U.K. capital to bolster in-depth cultural exchanges between the two countries.
