In this video, the U.S. Consulate in Karachi hosted a football clinic for local schoolgirls. Sports diplomacy has become an integral tool in building relationships between the U.S. and other nations. U.S. Consulate General Michael Dodman states, “This program is about two things, the things that bring us together as a culture which is the love of sports and to help improve the skills of the children of Karachi.”
This video features a hip hop music festival to celebrate 60 years of Myanmar-Japan diplomatic relations and was held in Yangon, Burma. The festival was organized by the Japan embassy in Myanmar and featured hip hop artist from both Myanmar and Japan. Cultural diplomacy was on display by celebrating shared music and dance.
CPD Conversations presents an interview with Richard Wike, Director of Global Attitudes Research at the Pew Research Center. Wike discusses the positive attitudes both Indians and Americans have of each other and that even when the global perception of the United States was significantly lower during the George W. Bush administration, Indians still held a positive view of the U.S.
In this video, Egyptian Ambassador Mohamed Al Orabi discusses how Egypt can rebuild its reputation abroad. He points to Egypt’s soft power advantage; children around the world are taught to admire Egyptian civilization, and people “dream to come to Egypt” because of its ancient mystique. However, Orabi recognizes that Egyptian public diplomacy has been held back by insufficient coordination across sectors and between government agencies.

The video’s theme, "We are all Athletes," emphasizes that although the lives of Olympic and Paralympic athletes may differ in some ways, they are all dreamers, competitors, champions, and teammates.
In this Public Diplomat podcast, CPD Assistant Director for Research and Publications Naomi Leight discusses CPD’s Top 10 Public Diplomacy Stories of 2013. By weighting the importance of news outlets, determining which countries most actively conducted and received public diplomacy campaigns, and soliciting input from international experts, CPD has identified the field’s key events and trends of 2013. These include the rise of Africa, public-private partnerships, fashion, and digital tools.
Appearing on Participant Media’s digital platform TakePart Live, CPD Assistant Director for Research and Publications Naomi Leight discussed the long-term effects of the Arab Spring. Noting that “democracy is a process,” Leight emphasized that true democratization takes decades, and that Arab governments should be modeled on Arab—rather than Western—principles.
Speaking to “The Monocle Daily” in a live interview segment on January 15, CPD Director Jay Wang discussed our 2013 “Top 10 Stories in PD” list. He mentioned that 2013 saw a great deal of PD by non-traditional actors, a trend he expects to continue in 2014. Specifically, Wang discussed Pope Francis, Facebook, and Russian president Vladimir Putin, among others. Looking ahead, Wang sees emerging trends in the growing importance of e-diplomacy.
