Myanmar a Testing Ground for Democracy and Diplomacy

Hands clasped and eyes squeezed shut, the students stand in two lines near the back of a spacious monastery classroom. Several suppress a smile as they wait for an “electric pulse” to make its way down each line, passed from one person to the next with a quick squeeze of the hand. When it reaches a young woman at the end of one row, she races to grab a water bottle from the seat of a plastic chair nearby.

When the International Indian Film Academy awards, Bollywood's annual global extravaganza, opened in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, actor Anil Kapoor, filmmakers Ramesh Sippy and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and industry honchos shared the stage with an unlikely co-speaker - India's number two diplomat. Anil Wadhwa, secretary (east) in the ministry of external affairs, is in charge of India's relations with almost half the world, from Palestine to the Philippines and Syria to South Korea.

Boots-and-All Approach to World Diplomacy

Swapping the lush green soccer fields of Australia for the arid dusty plains of Kenya, Adelaide United star Awer Mabil will make the long journey back to his birthplace at the Kakuma refugee camp to deliver hundreds of pairs of soccer boots and sports gear to children. Mabil said he was prompted to contribute in some way to the lives of the 180,000 refugees living in Kakuma after returning to visit last year and seeing scores of children playing soccer barefoot in the dirt.

Israeli Diplomats try to Delay EU Vote on Labeling Israeli-made Products

European Union is to vote on labeling products manufactured in the Golan Heights and West Bank.  Israel's Foreign Ministry has begun all-out diplomatic efforts to try to stop the European Union from labeling of good and products manufactured in the Golan Heights and Israeli settlements in the West Bank, Israeli daily Haartez reported Sunday.
