Turkish PM Unveils Reforms After Summer of Protests

Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, unveiled the first big package of liberalising reforms in years on Monday, making overtures to the large Kurdish minority and proposing that headscarved women be allowed to sit in parliament and work as civil servants for the first time in the history of the Turkish republic.

Misreporting the Turkish Protests

In late May, protesters descended on Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park. At first, there was a small sit-in over re-development plans that would have it, one of the few parks in European Istanbul. After months of unsuccessful petitioning to save the park, activists took to camping out there to prevent the demolition. Police removed them by force, setting their encampment on fire in the process.

Netanyahu to Press Obama for No Letup on Iran Pressure

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will warn President Barack Obama in White House talks on Monday that Iran's diplomatic “sweet talk” cannot be trusted and will urge him to keep up the pressure to prevent Tehran from being able to make a nuclear bomb.

President’s Popularity on Upward Trend

A recent survey by Brazilian pollster Ibope, commissioned by the Confederação Nacional da Indústria (CNI, the national industry confederation) confirms that the popularity of the president, Dilma Rousseff, is on the rise amid protest fatigue and boosted by her tough stance towards the US following revelations that the US National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on her and on Petróleo Brasileiro (Petrobras, the state-controlled oil company).

Skateistan: Skateboarding in Afghanistan - in Pictures

Skateistan is a skating and education project based in Kabul, Afghanistan. It was set up by Oliver Percovich in 2007 and teaches children from all socio-economic backgrounds to skateboard. About 40% of its members are girls – a rarity in a country where until recently, women were banned from participating in sport. Some of the images featured here are from a new book Skateistan: The Tale of Skateboarding in Afghanistan.

Iran Sees Tourism as Effective Means of Public Diplomacy
