CPD categorizes the range and type of PD-related research it conducts and facilitates under 11 groups based on area of focus. All CPD Research projects are associated with at least one of the following categories.

Research that covers the use of social media, mobile apps, online games, and other new technologies.
Research pertaining to development issues such as traditional foreign aid relief, non-state actor participation in relief, disaster relief, water issues, food issues, developing world issues such as education and women & girls.
Research that include public diplomacy initiatives spearheaded by foreign ministries, heads of state, the military, and more.
Research that include historical cases and literature, theories of public diplomacy, and evaluation techniques.
Research that include internet, radio, and satellite broadcasting from state-run broadcasters. It can also include more traditional journalism and the media’s impact on public diplomacy.
Research that focuses on government sponsored exchanges, academic exchanges, military exchanges, parliamentary exchanges, and professional training programs.
Research that illustrates how different nations and places use branding strategies and image building to project their image to the world.
Research that focuses on the public diplomacy work of corporations, non-governmental organizations, citizens, multilateral institutions and terrorist organizations.
Research that includes global public opinion surveys that discuss the perception or feelings of one public towards a foreign government or public.
Research that focuses on the value of soft power and smart power as tools in the field of public diplomacy, this can also include stories that bolster soft power for a nation.
