KEEP READINGThe "Jewels" of Ballet Diplomacy
Ballet diplomacy takes center stage at the Lincoln Center in New York City in a performance of George Balanchine's Jewels. It features three periods of his life: "Emeralds" for his time in Paris in the 1920s, "Rubies" for his work in America in the 1930s, and "Diamonds" for his childhood in Russia.
Together, the New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, and Bolshoi Ballet will perform the show whose music has American, French, and Russian influences. Aurélie Dupont says "I think 'Emeralds' has something very French about the technique, which is the feet," while Nigel Redden notes that "'Diamonds' is danced to Tchaikovsky, who always conjures up a sense of Russia and a sense of the grandeur of the Imperial Court."
