Preserving South Korea's Moving Image

Hieyoon Kim, Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies at Brown University, has published her latest article, "Archive in the State of Emergency: Realizing Film Preservation in cold war South Korea" in the current issue of the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television. 

In this essay, she examines the creation of the Korean Film Preservation Center, a South Korean film archive that took shape during the 1970s and 1980s in order to collect, preserve and categorize South Korean films for an international audience.

"Founded as a governmental institution, the Korean Film Preservation Center (KFPC) was not intended to be a nationally representative archive for Korean films but rather to facilitate cultural diplomacy by becoming a member of FIAF [International Federation of Film Archives], a global network of film archives," explain the publishers. Kim's academic work focuses on the effect of media on the cultural dimensions of contemporary South Korea.
