CPD Board Member Teaches "Radically Different" PD Class

Barry Sanders, a long-time member of CPD's Advisory Board and Chair of the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games, is also a professor in the Communications Studies Department at UCLA teaching specialized courses on public diplomacy. His latest class, which he co-teaches with Judy Milestone “Communications 163: Public Diplomacy,” participated in an international competition to stall extremism by groups such as Islamic State group. The result is Safe Spot, a website and social movement designed to foster ideals of acceptance, safety, community and ultimately discourage isolated individuals from joining extremist groups.

The competition — “ P2P: Challenging Extremism” — is being conducted by the private organization EdVenture Partners in conjunction with the U.S. State Department. The top three teams will be announced later this month.
