CPD Director Participates in NYT “Room for Debate” Forum on Secretary Clinton’s Legacy

CPD's Director, Philip Seib, took part in “Room for Debate" the online forum in The New York Times’. The theme was "Judging Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State."

Professor Seib’s opinion piece, titled “A Champion of Public Diplomacy,” discusses Hillary Clinton’s engagement with publics around the world, specifically her emphasis on innovation and two way dialogue. Seib states:

Clinton showed she understood that in a world with five billion cell phones and growing use of social media, people want to connect directly with those whose policies affect them. Further, once the connection is made, people expect to have their say and be listened to. One-way communication is archaic and ineffective; dialogue is an essential part of a new global politics grounded in media-based empowerment.

In addition to Philip Seib, other participants in the discussion included, Paul J. Saunders from the Center For The National Interest, Meyrav Wurmser Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute, Isobel Coleman from the Council on Foreign Relations, Danielle Pletka, Vice-President for Foreign and Defense Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, Minxin Pei, Professor of Government at Claremont McKenna College, Dmitri Trenin from the Carnegie Moscow Center, and Political Scientist, Zeev Maoz. These participants analyzed her tenure as Secretary of State.
