Program Prepares Young Refugees for NYC Schools

A partnership between public schools in New York City and the International Rescue Committee, a nongovernmental organization that resettles refugees from regions of conflict, is helping youth to make the transition between cultures, countries and customs with their Refugee Youth Summer Academy. The curriculum of this six-week program, which encompasses the usual U.S. education requirements including English, math and social studies, also teaches students how to communicate and work with people of different cultures, to think creatively and critically, and to be confident enough to ask questions in and out of the classroom. The program emphasizes people-to-people exchanges to both promote goodwill and mutual understanding, as well as to prepare these students for success when entering New York's regular school system in the fall.
