As an emerging middle power Turkey has been actively seeking to exert influence, specifically in the Middle East and in Africa through means of public diplomacy. Educational exchanges, cultural institutions, media outputs, international conferences, infrastructure aid, and humanitarian assistance are Turkey’s most notable governmental and non-governmental public diplomacy tools.

In 1999, a white South African, Dennis Dupree, opened a restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn along with his brother and sister-in-law. They named it Madiba, the clan name used by many South Africans to refer affectionately to Nelson Mandela. When people in Brooklyn heard the news of Mandela's death, many quickly gathered at Madiba.

For all the growing interest in public diplomacy, the field still suffers from a lack of specificity in use of the term. This isn’t necessarily a problem, but it is a source of confusion. A look at the CPD blog demonstrates the wonderful breadth of issues that fall under the rubric of public diplomacy. A survey of peer-reviewed literature from the last five decades yields more than 600 articles employing the term – each with its own understanding of public diplomacy.

An Argentine human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner spoke out against Colombia’s planned new ambassador to Argentina due to the candidate facing accusations of human rights violations, reported a local newspaper on Thursday. Peace Prize winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel sent a letter late Wednesday to the Argentinian foreign minister asking him to reconsider the assignment of former Colombian military commander, Alejandro Navas Ramos, as Colombia’s new ambassador to Argentina.
