Female Ambassadors in Ankara Support Gender Equality in Diplomacy

Four female diplomats in Ankara have expressed their support for women in diplomacy, saying they are hopeful that the number of female diplomats will increase worldwide in the future. Nina Vaskunlahti, the Finnish ambassador to Turkey, said in an exclusive interview with Sunday's Zaman that there are a greater number of female ambassadors in Finland than there were in the past.

Nigeria: Jonathan Snubs #BringBackOurGirls Protesters

The hope of the #BringBackOurGirls protesters in Abuja that President Goodluck Jonathan would address them on Thursday was dashed as police officers formed a human barrier around the Eagles Square forcing the protesters to end their march there.The protesters, who were supposed to march from Unity Fountain, near Transcorp Hotel, Maitama, to the Presidential Villa could not get to their destination as police officers blocked all roads leading to the villa.

Biden’s Visit to Turkish Cyprus a Historical Step, Says FM Davutoğlu

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Turkish Cyprus is a historical step as it shows equal treatment to both sides and gives a positive message, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said.  During his visit to the divided island, Biden hailed Cyprus as a “key partner” and said its rival leaders had agreed to “speed up” efforts to end the 40-year division. Biden ended his visit, the highest level by a U.S. official to Cyprus since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1962, late on May 22.

Celebration Marks Hoi An’s World Cultural Heritage Status

A wide range of activities are taking place in the central province of Quang Nam from May 20-26 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Hoi An Ancient Town being recognised as a World Cultural Heritage site.  Hoi An ancient town was recognised as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO on December 4, 1999, and presented four awards in heritage management, protection and promotion.

So Much for Cultural Openness

‘Art is committed to telling truths, even if unpalatable. This can make life uncomfortable for governments’. Abraham Oghobase is a Nigerian photographer in his mid-thirties whose witty and original pictures are gaining him an international reputation. His work is based on the documentary tradition, but it is given a distancing quality by the artist’s own presence in the photograph. This combination of reportage and performance art, while not unique, compellingly adds layers of complication to otherwise straightforward depictions of the socio-economic tensions of his homeland.

USAID, Susan Rice Launch '360-Degree' Nutrition Strategy

The U.S. Agency for International Development, with help from National Security Advisor Susan Rice, announced Thursday a new “multi-sectoral nutrition strategy” which aims to reduce by 2 million over five years the number of chronically malnourished and “stunted” children worldwide and also to keep acute malnutrition below 15 percent in places experiencing humanitarian crisis.

US is Given Artists' Impressions of UAE Life with Travelling Exhibition

A major exhibition by Emirati artists has opened in Washington DC, the first leg of an 18-month tour of the US. More than 50 works by 25 Emirati artists, selected to be accessible to American viewers, will also visit Texas, California and other places.
