India to Increase Cultural Presence Overseas

Following the lead of representative cultural institutions such as Allianz Francaise, Goethe Institut and the British Council, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) has expressed plans to strengthen its presence across the globe by introducing “cultural cells”, as they are called by ICCR Director General Virender Gupta. Culture ranks high in the priorities of the Indian Government, as is reflected by the increase in funding the ICCR has received in this year.

U.S. House of Representatives Passes Simon Study Abroad Bill

The Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act gained significant momentum yesterday as it passed the U.S. House of Representatives as part of the Foreign Relations Authorization Act for Fiscal Years 2010 and 2011 (H.R. 2410). The Foreign Relations Act, introduced last month by Representative Howard Berman (D-Calif.), is a comprehensive piece of legislation to enhance the U.S. foreign policy efforts of the U.S. Department of State and the Peace Corps.

Egypt to publish Israeli novels for first time

Egypt will publish Arabic translations of novels by renowned Israeli writers Amos Oz and David Grossman for the first time, a culture ministry official told AFP on Thursday...Culture Minister Faruq Hosni, whose bid to become the next director general of UNESCO has suffered setbacks because of comments he made about burning Israeli books, gave the project the green light, he said.

Iran, Poland National Libraries Sign MOU

Iran National Library and Archives (INLA) and the National Library of Poland signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Sunday. The two countries agreed to exchange books, periodicals, scientific achievements, and help raise information on how to collect and preserve the rare collection.
