Dr. Kathy Fitzpatrick is an internationally-recognized scholar in public relations and public diplomacy. Her work, which focuses primarily on U.S. public diplomacy, adopts a relational perspective that views public diplomacy as a resource for building and sustaining supportive relationships among nations and their foreign and domestic publics.
In August 2015, Fitzpatrick was named senior associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Communication (SOC) at American University in Washington, DC. She plays an integral role in shaping the school’s long-term initiatives and strategies, directing curriculum and program development, and overseeing SOC academic affairs. From 2009-2011, she served as a CPD Research Fellow.
Fitzpatrick is currently conducting a Delphi study (with Professor Candace White, University of Tennessee), examining corporate executive perceptions of the role and impact of global public relations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on public diplomacy. This work is supported by a grant from the Arthur W. Page Center for Integrity in Public Communication in the College of Communication at Penn State University.
Her books and monographs include U.S. Public Diplomacy in a Post-9/11 World: From Messaging to Mutuality, The Future of U.S. Public Diplomacy: An Uncertain Fate, U.S. Public Diplomacy’s Neglected Domestic Mandate, Ethics in Public Relations: Responsible Advocacy and Public Relations Ethics.
Her research has been published in leading scholarly journals in communications and diplomacy, including The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, the International Journal of Strategic Communications, the Journal of Public Relations Research, the Journal of Advertising, the Journal of Mass Media Ethics, the Journal of Communication Management and Public Relations Review.
Fitzpatrick serves as co-editor of the Palgrave Macmillan Book Series on Global Public Diplomacy and serves on the international advisory boards of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy and Public Diplomacy Magazine. She also serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Public Relations Research, Public Relations Review, Communications Quarterly, and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics. advisory boards of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy and Public Diplomacy Magazine.
