Meet the 2016-2018 CPD Research Fellows
The USC Center on Public Diplomacy is pleased to introduce its new CPD Research Fellows for 2016-2018: Banu Akdenizli, Mietek Boduszyński and Alexander Buhmann.
Reviewed by an independent faculty review committee and selected from a competitive pool of international applicants, Akdenizli, Boduszyński and Buhmann will each oversee a substantive research project that will yield at least two outputs, including a publication for the Center’s publication series, CPD Perspectives on Public Diplomacy, during their two-year term.
About the 2016-2018 CPD Research Fellows
Banu Akdenizli is Associate Professor of Communications at Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q). Prior to joining NU-Q, Akdenizli was an Associate Professor at Yeditepe University in Turkey, an analyst and index methodologist with the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism in Washington D.C., and adjunct faculty at George Mason University and at Temple University. Akdenizli's CPD research project "Digital Diplomacy in the Gulf: An Analysis of Embassies, Foreign Ministries, and Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Twitter Accounts" will study how Twitter is being used in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries as a form of digital diplomacy.
Mietek Boduszyński is Assistant Professor of Politics and International Relations at Pomona College. Prior to joining Pomona, he was a U.S. Foreign Service Officer specializing in Public Diplomacy, with postings in Albania, Kosovo, Japan, Egypt and Libya. Boduszyński's CPD research project "U.S. Public Diplomacy in the Age of the Fortress Embassy: Balancing Mission and Security in the Post-Benghazi Era" will analyze how U.S. public diplomacy has changed in the wake of the Benghazi attacks and will offer recommendations on how best to carry out core PD outreach and programs.
Alexander Buhmann is Assistant Professor at the Norwegian Business School, Oslo. He received his doctorate at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. His research focuses on public diplomacy, public relations, and corporate communication. Buhmann's CPD research project "Why Do(n’t) They Measure? Drivers and Barriers in Public Diplomacy Measurement and Evaluation" seeks to gain critical insights into the drivers and barriers of M&E-related behavior of practitioners in the PD domain.
About the CPD Research Fellowship Program
In August 2009, the Center launched the research fellowship program. Designed to support and publicize the work of scholars and practitioners of public diplomacy, each year, the Center selects three non-resident fellows, each serving a two-year term.
