The latest issue of CPD Perspectives in Public Diplomacy is out now. Authors Barry Sautman and Li Ying assess Chinese activism through the lens of the 2008 pro-China demonstrations in Europe and North America ahead of the Beijing Olympics.

CPD joined with the Al Jazeera Center for Studies on October 31 and November 1, 2011 to mark Al Jazeera’s fifteenth anniversary as the Arab world’s leading regional news channel.

The tenth paper in the 2011 CPD Perspectives series, "Campaigning For a Seat on the UN Security Council: A Middle Power Reflection on the Role of Public Diplomacy," examines how and when middle power states might apply public diplomacy tactics alongside traditional diplomatic practice to improve the likelihood of election to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

CPD Interns Maya Babla, Mona El Hamdani and Aparajitha Vadlamannati are part of a team of seven graduate students currently on a two-week research trip to India to analyze the country's public diplomacy efforts. The objective of the trip is to spark a larger discussion on the relevance and value of public diplomacy within the international affairs and communications communities.

Today, the USC Center on Public Diplomacy released its latest Media Monitor Report on AFRICOM - AFRICOM's Still Undefined Future. The report ponders the future of AFRICOM and suggests that the appropriateness of a primarily hard power entity, such as the Defense Department, assuming soft power responsibilities needs to be debated further.

This latest issue of PDiN Monitor is titled Assessing China's Charm Offensive. Following a mandate by the Chinese Communist Party's plenary session in October there has been an increase in focus on China's cultural exports, and the rest of the world has taken note.

Dr. Lina Khatib will discuss regional Arab reform during the upcoming "In the Middle of the Storm: Development and Governance in the Arab World," conference to be held on December 6, 2011, at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC. The two panel conference will feature a keynote lunch with Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, International Monetary Fund.
