US and Iran faced off at the World Basketball Championships here on Wednesday night, electrifying Iranian fans and offering a rare opportunity for people of the two arch-enemy nations to meet face to face. It was the latest instance of sports diplomacy first used by both sides in the late 1990s to ease US-Iran hostility.

SAfrica to end amnesty for illegal Zimbabweans

South Africa's government says it is withdrawing the special status granted to illegal Zimbabwean immigrants who fled their country's economic meltdown and political violence. Government spokesman Themba Maseko said South Africa will begin deportations after Dec. 31. It ends an April 2009 amnesty that allowed Zimbabweans to stay in the country without passports and visas.

Google, Skype targeted in India security crackdown

India has widened its security crackdown, asking all companies that provide encrypted communications - not just BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion - to install servers in the country to make it easier for the government to obtain users' data. That would likely affect digital giants like Google and Skype.

China's Minister of Culture Cai Wu arrived in Taipei Thursday at the head of a 40-member delegation for an eight-day visit...Cai was invited by the Taipei-based Sheen Chuen-chi Cultural and Educational Foundation to visit in his capacity as chief of Beijing's China Friendship Association.

The Chie of Staff, Henry Martey Newman has urged Ghanaians to support initiatives aimed at finding a brand identity for Ghana. Mr. Newman was of the opinion that to build a better brand identity for Ghana, cocoa, which is the major foreign exchange earner of the country, should be rebranded and redesigned to look more attractive.
