Other Voices: Engaging Cuba Will Pay Off in the End

But the new relationship will give American diplomats greater leeway to reach out to dissidents. Instead of asking permission to travel around the island, diplomats simply have to notify the government of their travel plans. Not ideal, but then Cuba is not a free country. That’s the whole point of the new policy, to achieve by engagement — soft power, if you will — what hard power could not achieve during the Cold War and beyond.

Yunus Emre Institute celebrates “The Voice of 1000 Years: Turkish Language Festival”

The Yunus Emre Institutes and language programs have been also Turkey's force as a diplomatic competitor in grounds of cultural diplomacy around the world, Balcı added. "Yunus Emre Institute's language programs help many of the students to re-establish ties their relatives who speak Turkish, find jobs, and add a new color to their lives," Balcı also said. Turkish Language Summer School aims to acquaint its students with Turkish culture and arts, in addition to improving their Turkish language skills.

American Democracy Project Keeps Students in the Know on Voting, Cultural Topics

The American Democracy Project, a national initiative that has chapters on many college campuses, aims to prepare college graduates to be knowledgeable, engaged citizens in their communities, according to the official ADP website. The project is a partnership between The New York Times and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Denmark Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen to 'Reopen' Ties with Russia

Danish Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen said Friday that he intends to reopen political dialogue with Russia, amid growing estrangement between Moscow and the E.U. Jensen said that despite rising tensions, dealing with Russia was a diplomatic necessity. “Even though Russia is a major threat, we can’t find a crane large enough to move it. Russia is situated geographically where it is and that means that we need to deal with it,” he said.

Indonesian Students Bring Papua’s Cultures to Singapore

Every year, about 120 students in the National University of Singapore (NUS) are busy preparing for the biggest student production in campus: NUANSA Cultural Productions. It is an annual show which was started as a humble initiative in 2008 by a group of Indonesian students in NUS, aiming to showcase the diverse and rich Indonesian culture to the Singaporean community.

At Tuscany’s Only Kosher Winery, Owners Can’t Touch the Chianti

“We must be crazy to make kosher wine in Tuscany,” laughed Pellegrini, who, according to Jewish law, cannot touch the wine because she is not Jewish. Other non-kosher Tuscan wineries have occasionally produced a run of kosher wine, but since it began producing bottles eight years ago, Terra di Seta has been the only fully kosher winery in central Italy’s Chianti region
