In an interview with Radio France International Espanol (RFI), published on January 31, 2011, USC Center on Public Diplomacy Director Philip Seib discussed Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based news outlet, and its coverage of recent events in Tunisia and Egypt.
Reporter Alejo Schapire questioned Seib about Al Jazeera’s editorial policy and common criticisms expressed about the network. Commenting on its impact in the popular uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, Seib said, “Al Jazeera is both messenger and actor, both are inseparable in this situation. By providing information to a mass audience, Al Jazeera delivers to the public news flow essential for the mobilization of large numbers of people.”
