Combating Cultural Illiteracy Through Exchanges

Headlines this week in PD News showcased the role of public diplomacy in facilitating cross-cultural understanding and engagement through cultural exchanges. In Myanmar, students are taking selfies with friends from different religious and ethnic backgrounds as a way to promote tolerance and demonstrate that “friendships can cross boundaries.” Meanwhile, in Australia, Melbourne chefs participated in the inaugural “Multicultural Museums Cook Off,” which required Greek, Italian, Jewish and Muslim chefs to prepare dishes from each other’s cultures, and in Pakistan, Pakistani border troops presented sweets to their Indian counterparts in celebration of the Hindu festival of Diwali.
