She is not the most likely of diplomats, but Pamela Anderson has told how she has influenced some of the worlds most formidable leaders – thanks to Baywatch. Anderson, the actress and model, claimed she had convinced Vladimir Putin to ban the import of seal products, and had discussed major policy with Fidel Castro. Speaking at the launch of her new charity the Pamela Anderson Foundation in Cannes, she said she had earned the ear of many world leaders after Baywatch was screened in 150 countries.

North Korea Issues Rare Public Apology for Deadly Building Collapse

In a rare public acceptance of responsibility, the North Korean government announced Sunday that an apartment building under construction in its capital of Pyongyang collapsed, potentially killing hundreds of people. The collapse occurred last week, and rescue operations were suspended Saturday, according to state news agency Korean Central News Agency.Analysts said North Korea's disclosure of the accident may be intended to draw a contrast toSouth Korea's response to the deadly ferry accident in April that killed hundreds of people, many of them students.

NATO Plants Flag In Uzbekistan

NATO formally opened its liaison office in Uzbekistan on Friday, a year after it started working and amid heightened Russian rhetoric about the western alliance encroaching on its backyard. Uzbekistan is unmistakably taking a different path than that of its neighbors. UN, EU Team Up to Restore Timbuktu's Cultural Heritage

he United Nations and the European Union have forged an agreement today to fund the restoration of cultural heritage in Timbuktu that was destroyed by extremists after fighting broke out in 2012 between Malian Government forces and Tuareg rebels.“This is vital for Mali and is important for the rest of the world because World Heritage is common to us all,”said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.

Cyber World is an Opportunity Not a Threat: Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said that the cyber world should be regarded as an opportunity and not a threat.  The Iranian president said that new communications technologies, such as satellite channels, the internet, and mobile phones, should not be considered a threat to the Islamic beliefs of young people. Rouhani also stated that the era of delivering messages through “one-way tribunes” and “one-way speakers” has come to an end, noting that in the modern world, the more widely messages are circulated, the more effectual they are.

Bosnian Film-maker Tanovic awarded EU prize at Cannes

Oscar-winning Bosnian director Danis Tanovic will be adding another prize to his trophy cabinet after this year’s Cannes Film Festival.Tanovic was presented with the EU’s Prix Media (Media Prize) for his film project entitled, “What are you looking at?” He shares the award with co-scriptwriter Predrag Kojovic and producer Amra Baksic Camo. The EU Media Prize given to the best new film project eligible for support from the Creative Europe Media programme. The award provides funding for script development, casting, initial marketing and pilot production.
