KEEP READINGTrump's Digs at VOA Challenged by Geoffrey Cowan and James Glassman
Geoffrey Cowan, founder of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy and former director of Voice of America (VOA), and James K. Glassman, founding executive director of the George W. Bush Institute and former Chairman of the U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors (now USAGM), coauthored a new opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times, “Trump’s War on Voice of America is All About Him – as usual.”
Their article rebukes the U.S. president’s recent assertion that VOA amplified Chinese propaganda on COVID-19. Cowan and Glassman argue that “by no stretch of the imagination is VOA pro-Chinese or anti-American. VOA’s reporters try, very simply, to get the story right.”
Cowan and Glassman illustrate their point by highlighting frequent conflicts between the Chinese government and VOA as it pursues its mission to provide truthful reporting free from political interference.
