New Book on Contemporary Public Diplomacy Research

A Research Agenda for Public Diplomacy, published in June 2023 by Elgar Research Agendas, provides an outline of contemporary public diplomacy research and maps the future of the field. The volume was edited by CPD senior visiting scholar Eytan Gilboa, professor of international communication at Bar-Ilan University’s School of Communication.

The book is divided into three parts, examining the actors, disciplines and instruments involved in the public diplomacy process. Chapters provide insights from many of the leading public diplomacy scholars and practitioners, who explore existing research, gaps in scholarship, and future research opportunities. The diverse perspectives shed light on the broad boundaries of public diplomacy – a field that has become a core instrument of foreign policy and national security. The book is intended as a resource for public diplomacy practitioners and officials, as well as for researchers and students of international and public relations, political science, digital media, and communication.

CPD-affiliated researchers who contributed chapters to the book include CPD Director Jay Wang; CPD Senior Research Specialist Sohaela Amiri; CPD Faculty Fellows Amelia Arsenault, Caitlin Byrne, Nicholas Cull, Kathy Fitzpatrick, James Pamment, and Rhonda Zaharna; CPD Research Fellow Ilan Manor; CPD blog contributors Shawn Powers and Craig Hayden; CPD dissertation grant awardee Phillip Arceneaux; and USC Annenberg doctoral candidate Jack Tang.
