As the world’s fifth largest economy, California plays a consequential role in global economy, culture and society. On June 2nd Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis joined us for a conversation on California’s response to the COVID-19 challenges, its subnational leadership in international affairs, and vision for a re-imagined global dynamic where cities and states aren’t just coming to the table—they’re starting to fill it. Public diplomacy has much to offer in times of crisis. Relationships with global audiences provide the backbone of a country's credibility, mutuality and ability to collaborate internationally. During these times of uncertainty, what can the world learn from South Korea's strategies and actions, both regionally and globally? 

New communication tools in the digital era have enabled governments to engage audiences, home and abroad, about key policy decisions and much more. Given that these audiences no longer need traditional information gatekeepers, today’s public diplomacy officers must be flexible, reactive and swift, especially on social media. This is why realtime computational methods to collect, manage and analyze social media data in real time is key to the future of public diplomacy.

Despite striking historical similarities among their peoples, Israel, Cyprus and Greece experienced mostly unfriendly relations for almost 60 years. This situation was radically altered during the past decade with the emergence of ever-widening cooperation among the three states.

Japan has been perennially ranked as one of the strongest soft-power nations in the world. On Friday, February 28, CPD convened a conference to examine Japan on the global stage with a focus on culture and innovation as drivers of a nation’s soft power. This conference brought together leading scholars, practitioners, innovators, and cultural thought leaders to explore Japanese culture and its global influence. This program was in cooperation with the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles.
