Latin America: A Desert of New Ideas

Many of the practices now associated with modern-day diplomacy and international law were pioneered and put into practice in Latin America already in the second half of the 1800s. UAE Pledges Dh250m to Support Syrian People

The United Arab Emirates, UAE, has pledged Dh250 million (US$68 million) to support the Syrian people [...] Moreover, the UAE has pledged to host 15,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years. It also helps Syria's neighbours hosting large numbers of refugees to through humanitarian programmes to shoulder this huge humanitarian burden and support their economies through development programmes.

In a First, Japan Floats House League for Promotion of Yoga

The league, launched by India's ambassador to Japan Sujan Chinoy in the presence of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, will be headed by Hakubun Shimomura, former minister for education, culture, sports, and science and technology [...] Chinoy said that the establishment of the league comes at an opportune moment. "India and Japan have a special strategic and global partnership based on our shared values of democracy, rule of law, tolerance and transparency..." he said.

Israel Appoints its First Female Muslim Diplomat

The Foreign Ministry on Wednesday appointed Rasha Atamny, 31, to represent the Jewish state in Ankara, Turkey, making her Israel’s first female Muslim diplomat [...] “This time I listened to the speeches from Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and Egypt condemning Israel’s ‘systematic violations of women’s rights’ while I, an Arab-Muslim woman of Palestinian origin represent Israel at the UN General Assembly,” she said.

#BrandPAKISTAN Takes Over Berlin

The Pakistani ambassador to Germany, His Excellency Jauhar Saleem and his wife Zara Jauhar were accompanied by over forty other Foreign Service officials at the event, which aimed to propel Pakistani fashion and art onto the global scale. #BrandPAKISTAN was designed to stimulate interaction and synergies between local fashion and jewellery designers, musicians and artists and the international audience.

Rebirth of the Municipal Foreign Policy Movement

City diplomacy luminary and Attorney Michael Shuman, a leader of the former Center for Innovative Diplomacy, reminds us that local government participation in foreign affairs is enumerated in and protected by the Constitution. Thus, when American local governments responded to the threat of nuclear annihilation vis-à-vis the U.S. arms race with the Soviet Union, to the federal government’s inadequate response to Apartheid, and to other problems from the federal-level, the resultant municipal activism was not only legal, it was defining of American federalism.

UAE, India Collaborate in ‘Cultural Celebrations’

“India-UAE Cultural Celebrations: a cultural partnership for a positive future” is a cultural engagement programme between India and the United Arab Emirates, which celebrates the long-standing relationship between the two countries and looks to strengthen existing cultural and economic ties. The programme is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development and the Indian Business and Professional Group, and will involve various other Indian business and community groups.

Xi Extends 'Panda Diplomacy' to Finland

China's President Xi Jinping, on the way to his eagerly awaited first encounter with Donald Trump, met his Finnish counterpart in Helsinki Wednesday, extending Beijing's famed "panda diplomacy" to Finland. The two sides agreed to carry out "cooperative panda research" and "make the pandas messengers of friendship between our two countries," Xi said at a joint press conference in Helsinki.
