Deep in the Amazon, an Isolated Village Tunes in to the World Cup

While Rio de Janeiro and its famous beaches provide the touristic backdrop of the World Cup, the fevered grip of the world’s most popular sporting event can be felt even in some of the most isolated areas of the rain forest, where outsiders seldom visit. “Football is in our blood,” said Andre Pereira da Silva, 32, the chief of a small community of Sateré-Mawé Indians in Manaus, the largest city in the Amazon, who served as a guide.

In Latin America, Biden Rolls out Rhetoric to Increasingly Deaf Ears

Governments in South America have turned their back on US financial aid. Central Americans have seen tens of thousands of minors depart for the US under the pressure of poverty and violence. And the Caribbean is turning increasingly violent as drug cartels have reclaimed abandoned trafficking routes. Aside from more economic aid, Biden could be left with little more than rhetoric to offer a region that in 2011 ranked President Obama the most popular leader in the Americas.

Is Overseas Study Helping US-China Relations?

Both the number and growth of Chinese students at American universities is one of the more startling phenomena in higher education. A welcome one, too: study abroad would seem to promise a future where U.S.-China relations might be characterized by greater firsthand knowledge of American culture among the Chinese. By generating greater understanding, their experience in the U.S. should also expand their sense of common interests, brightening prospects for cooperation between the world’s main powers.

Tahiti Tourism Aims to Stand Out with New Branding Campaign

A new brand campaign from Tahiti Tourisme seeks to establish a deeper mystique lying beneath the surface of the “picture postcard” beauty of the destination. With the rise of competition in the Pacific from such island destinations as Fiji and the Cooks, Tahiti Tourisme saw a need to create more differentiation. The branding is global and not specific to any particular market.
