The British Museum’s “Hajj: Journey to the heart of Islam“ is the first major exhibition ever to focus on the Hajj. Aiming to draw crowds both Muslim and non-Muslim, the exhibition features objects from a number of different countries, as well as newly commissioned contemporary art works, to highlight the importance and relevance of the ancient tradition throughout history.
New technologies are commonly resisted by foreign ministries but it is now ten years since State established its Office of eDiplomacy. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) needs ediplomacy if it is going to continue to coordinate policy across an increasingly internationalised bureaucracy.
Iranians are heralding the country’s first Oscar win as the best public diplomacy for the Islamic Republic in many years. “Cinema,” the ex-president wrote to Farhadi in a public letter, “helps humanity to overcome aggression [and to be] able to bring hearts closer to each other.”
While people are rightly pointing to the power of social media to bring people across societies together, exchanges still represent a key component of public diplomacy. Exchanges offer an in-depth experience with a foreign country, its culture, its systems, and most importantly, its people.
The USC Center on Public Diplomacy hosted a major conference on water diplomacy. Water is essential to humankind’s existence, is increasingly unavailable because of pollution, failure to develop conservation programs, and mismanagement of water resources. During the near future, water shortages could lead to conflict in many parts of the world.
My own university has made an intentional effort to become home to some 8,000 international students...Such global diversity offers a meaningful learning laboratory not just for domestic students, but for international students who otherwise might be tempted to attend a relatively insulated American franchise in their home nation.
With the fall of Hungary’s Western-style, pluralistic democracy, the time is right for the United States to reinstate Radio Free Europe’s Hungarian-language broadcasts. Hungarian would then join 28 other languages in which RFE transmits its programs on radio stations in countries of the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, South Asia and the Balkans.
China’s new cross-strait action plan includes inviting Taiwanese to engage in “long stay” visits in China’s first-tier cities, living with selected Chinese families in an attempt to forge grassroots friendships. The Chinese authorities will also continue to encourage Taiwanese to study and work in China.
