Refugees Passing Through Greece Share their Tragedies in Heartwrenching Film

A woman named Ghoson, sitting in front of a dark gray backdrop, begins to cry. Behind the film set, where she agreed to tell her story, awaits the refugee camp in Leros, Greece, that she is squatting in, biding her time until she will try to make her way further into Europe. [...] These visceral snippets of suffering and heartache are some of the stories chronicled in “Refuge,” a documentary film released Wednesday by production company Magna Carta.

PBCJ Strikes Deal with Chinese Radio Station

The Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ) recently struck a deal with China Radio International (CRI) to share educational content, documentaries and a television series produced by the Chinese media entity, to be aired in Jamaica. [...] The documentaries will highlight the culture and lifestyle of Chinese people, which falls within the focus and mission of the PBCJ “to promote culture and heritage alongside with values and attitudes”

Japan–Russia Relations Need More than just Energy

On 16 May 2016 Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Envoy to the Far Eastern district, Yury Trutnev, met with officials from Japanese and Russian energy and metallurgical companies. The meeting followed a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss enhancing bilateral ties. [...] Public diplomacy is also another area of great potential between the two countries.

Dutch Marketing Ace Proposes Ambitious Nation Branding for Estonia

Peter Kentie, the Dutch marketing and branding specialist, has proposed an ambitious and clever nation branding for Estonia, where emphasis is on the ‘-est’ concept and new slogan, “just estonishing”. [...] Kentie told Estonian World that he was inspired to suggest new branding for Estonia, after seeing that the country is struggling to find a coherent nation branding and marketing strategy.

An Important CVE Step from the State Department

Some conventional public diplomacy measures are not suitable for countering violent extremism (CVE) because they are mismatched against extremists’ more aggressive tactics. But this week, the U.S. State Department has taken a significant step forward by announcing that it will place greater emphasis on development aid in its CVE efforts. A joint strategy that will better coordinate State Department CVE projects with USAID should bring new substance to public diplomacy that has CVE potential.

PH Embassy Fosters Global Awareness Through Art Show and Cultural Activities

The Philippine Embassy highlighted its engagement with the Filipino and Filipino-American community and public school students through a series of cultural events at the Romulo Hall this month. On May 19, an evening reception was held for the opening of the annual Brown Strokes on a White Canvas exhibit that featured the works of 19 artists who showcased their various paintings and sculptures at the Romulo Hall from May 17 to 20, 2016.

Overseas Trips Show Soft Power and Raise India's Profile

Prime Minister Narendra Modi always adds a personal touch to India's diplomacy. There are his well-known bear hugs with world leaders. On his foreign trips, the social media savvy Mr Modi posted a selfie taken with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang that attracted over 31 million hits on his Twitter-like Weibo account. [...] In his two years as Prime Minister, Mr Modi has sought to highlight India's soft power.

Book Aid International Returns to Sierra Leone

Book Aid International, a charity that supports literacy by increasing access to books, is returning to Sierra Leone. The charity, which ships around a million books each year to libraries in sub-Saharan Africa, sent a shipment of 38,000 brand new, carefully-selected books to Freetown to help the country rebuild after the Ebola crisis.
