Jamaican Art Disappears In Cuba

She was one of the international artists invited to exhibit in the Havana Biennial. And the only Jamaican!  [...] The theme of this year's Havana Biennial is 'Between the Idea and the Experience'. And the curators took the decision to move some of the art out of conventional exhibition spaces into the street.

Moving and Shaking: Harriet Rossetto, AJWS, TCRF and Israel Advocacy

Harriet Rossetto, the founder and executive vice president of Beit T’Shuvah, a residential treatment center and educational institution in Culver City, has been named a 2015 Advocate for Action by the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).  ONDCP Director Michael Botticelli recognized Rossetto during a ceremony at the White House on May 20.

Q&A with Ken Taylor: Canada's Former Ambassador to Iran talks Diplomacy, ISIS, Argo and Attending Crescent Heights in the 1950s

Ken Taylor, the former Canadian ambassador for Iran and centre of the so-called Canadian caper in 1979, gave a speech to the school’s graduating class at the Jubilee Auditorium last week. Born in Calgary, Taylor graduated from Crescent Heights in the 1950s. He played basketball and football for the school (“I wasn’t drafted,” he jokes) but yearned to travel the world. He got his wish, embarking on a globe-trotting career in the foreign service.

Qatar Announces New Gaza Reconstruction Projects

The president of the Qatari National Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza, Mohammad al-Amadi, announced the launch of a number of new projects for the Gaza Strip on Saturday.  According to official figures from Gaza, 16,000 homes were completely destroyed during last summer's war and another approximately 90,000 were partially destroyed.

Japan Government Funds US Soft Power Programmes

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs will give $15m to programmes this fiscal year covering Japanese politics and foreign policy in the US, in an effort to enhance Japan’s ‘soft power’ in the country. Georgetown University, Columbia University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be among the institutions selected to receive the funding, which will be mainly aimed at programmes in the areas of modern and contemporary Japanese politics and foreign policy.

U.N.: A military defeat of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq could scatter extremists around the globe. Would the world be a safer place if the United States and its allies were to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria? Not necessarily, according to a senior U.N. counterterrorism official. Extremist fighters have proven remarkably adept over the past three decades at transforming themselves at the close of battles.
