Global Migration Rate High as Hunger Crisis Worsens

The more people go hungry at home the more likely they are to migrate, according to the United Nations as the world grapples with four potential famines simultaneously for the first time in recent history. If governments want to curb global migration flows, they should tackle the hunger crises that are displacing so many people from their homes, the United Nations' food aid agency said on Friday.

Team Tibet Visits UK to Strengthen Ties

A delegation from China’s Tibet Autonomous Region has made a four-day visit to Britain to promote Tibetan culture and the achievements reached during the region’s recent development. [...] Speaking at a media briefing in London, Mr Baimachilin, the chairman of the delegation, said: “The purpose of our visit is to strengthen the exchange and communications between the National People’s Congress of China with the UK Parliament, as well as the exchanges with the local legislatures.

Canada to Set Up Investment Institute for Developing Countries

Canada will set up a new financing institute in Montreal to help co-ordinate private sector investments in developing countries.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau made the announcement during a press conference in Montreal on Friday. The Development Finance Institute (DFI) will facilitate partnerships between small and medium companies in the private sector in order to leverage investment in developing countries, particularly in sustainable development and poverty reduction.

World Needs 'Soft Power' of Education, Culture, Sciences

'Hard power' can no longer stop conflicts nor the rise of violent extremism and “ancient hatreds” such as antisemitism and racial discrimination, the head of the United Nations cultural agency said today, insisting that “we need 'soft power' of education, knowledge, culture, communication, the sciences, to strengthen the values we share and recognize the destiny we hold in common.”

Ugandan Diplomats to Get Financial Training

The Ugandan ministry of foreign affairs (MoFA) has partnered with Stanbic Bank to conduct financial training for Ugandan diplomats as the country positions all missions for commercial diplomacy. [...] Under commercial diplomacy, Mugoya said, missions abroad are expected to deliver tangible financial benefits in terms of direct foreign investments. -

Trump and Trade

So, when Trump defends NAFTA in order to save American jobs at Smithfield, he’s also protecting Chinese corporate interests. By the way, the Smithfield sale also netted fabulous bonuses for the CEOs on both sides. Increasingly, that too has been the story of free trade. In the textbooks, trade is supposed to be an opportunity for the less well off to get a bigger piece of a growing global economy. In reality, however, free trade has been a driver of economic inequality.
